• I hope someone can help.
I’ve had my site: maureencooke.com up since August 2009.
I tried adding a new site via webhost, using fantastico.
I got a weird message about being unable to install wordpress as there was already something in the root directory (sorry, I don’t remember it exactly).
Then I got the same message on my maureencooke.com site
I made sure I backed up.
    I have an SQL database
    I have a home directory.
What I don’t understand is how to get that SQL database, so it’s getting the content back on my site.
(I’ll worry about the theme later)
Anyone who could help, I’d sure appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Maureen

  • By home directory you mean all your public_html files before the install and everything else? If so:
    1. Re-upload your files
    2. Create a new database -or look for your old one- import your SQL file. You probably have access to a tool of the likes of phpMyAdmin
    3. If you’ve created a new database, replace the data in wp-config

    that should do it.

    Hi Julia,
Thanks. Unfortunately that didn’t do it. This is the error I’m getting:

Warning: require(/home/maureenc/public_html/wp-includes/load.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/maureenc/public_html/wp-settings.php on line 19
Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘/home/maureenc/public_html/wp-includes/load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /home/maureenc/public_html/wp- settings.php on line 19

I may be wrong, but what I was thinking is that I could get into the php file & remove line 19?

Or am I at the point where I need to actually hire somebody?

Julia proposed some serious things to try! Did you try option 1? (Manually re-upload the includes folder.)

Deleting a line from a PHP file is the last thing you want.

I’m not exactly an expert on errors, but “permission denied” sounds fishy to me. I’d have a look at file permissions (CHMOD).

    Just two suggestions.

    Hey Maureen,

Removing the line is definitely not the answer. Other than that, try a CHMOD to 755 of the offending file.

Using an FTP client is the easiest way and works for any host. If you are familiar with shells and have access, just go chmod the file to 755. Otherwse, here’s some pretty complete info to change the permissions.

    Hi Julia; Hi Roy,
I’m back. I reinstalled my sql database, then got a ‘couldn’t connect to database,’ so set up a new user, deleted the old user.
I no longer have the error about the database, and I can now log into my WP blog, but it’s not visible. It’s not loading. Sorry, I don’t know the terminology.
I can get to my dashboard and all my posts & pages are there – thank God – but when I go to maureencooke.com, there’s nothing there. At all.
    Any ideas?
    Maureen

P.S. Thank you both for your help. I am eternally grateful that I didn’t lose anything. 🙂

    Wow.
I’m in over my head. ALL my plugins have been deactivated due to an error. Says the plugin file does not exist.
