Add Variance to Product w/o Tracking Inventory

    I have a bunch of tshirts that I can print one of 3 designs on. I want to track inventory at a shirt level basis, as that’s my limiting factor.

    If I add shirt color/size to the variances, I can track the shirt inventory just fine, but I can’t let customers choose the design for their shirt.

    If I add the shirt color/size and design as variances, all 3 show up on the product page for customers, but I can have different inventories for the same color/size shirt. This leads me to having 4 Grey Large shirts available for one design, but none for the other 2 designs.

    Is there a way to keep the color/size as the main variances for tracking inventory, but still have the design as a variance without inventory tracking?

    Maybe I’m missing a simpler way of handling.

    Hi @sqlt,

    Thanks for contacting us!

    Why don’t you set 3 attributes (color – size – design) and create all variations from those attributes? So every single variation will have a combination of the attributes and you can manage stock and price at the variation level.

    What I suggested above is valid for the default core variation feature but if you’re using a plugin it might be slightly different.

    Can you show us a product link so we can better understand your requirement?

    If interested, you might also want to consider searching through product inventory extensions in the WooCommerce.com marketplace. There’s a 30-day refund policy so you can test them out and get a full refund if the product doesn’t fulfill your requirement.

    Thanks. I tried that, but it forces inventory at the design level, which I don’t want. I can add any design to any shirt.

    Here’s an example if I add all 3 variances to the product and set inventories.

    Let’s say I have 5 large white shirts left and 2 designs. With all 3 variable options, I would have 2 valid options. If I add 5 shirts to design one and no shirts to design 2, then I can have anyone order design 2, even though I still have shirts left. I could sit inventory, but then I’d end up with the same problem in the future.

    What I’d like is to have all 3 options on the product screen, but only track inventory for the shirts (2 variances of color/size).

    I hope that makes sense and helps illustrate the solution I’m seeking.

    My site is kind of jacked up right now from where I’ve been testing a bunch of stuff. Let me see if I can clean it up and send a link.
