API functions for upload handling?

    Hello there,

    I’m totally new in WP plugin development and would like to know if there are any API functions available to make life easier handling file uploads. I’m playing around with some kind of an authors avatar plugin.

    So what’s the silver bullet of handling uploads in a WP plugin?
