Update to the latest version not only failed with a critical error but has wiped out all the previous settings I had.
None of my registered users can now access any of the content. I will need to restore a backup now.

I suppose something special with your setup, as tens of thousands of other updates have been installed quietly.
Can you provide any details from the server system logs, what was really happened? May be you can repeat the issue with backup copy restored at the development server? I would investigate it.
