Plugin Activation Error

    I have been trying to install several plugins lately, including buddypress and GD Star Rating. I tried installing them through the one click install and they didn’t unzip. So then I installed them manually. They show up as available plugins now, but when i go to activate i get the following error:

    Error 500 – Internal server error

    An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later.

    I use 1and1 for hosting but not sure if this is something on their end, wordpress or the plugin.

    Their end.

    Try modifying your site’s .htaccess file and adding this line:
    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

    Seems that by default 1&1 has you running PHP4. I have an old’ish blog post that discusses this in more detail if necessary.
