Session: Retrieving session variables

Hello,
I wondered if anyone knows how to retrieve session variables.
After I did couple hours search on google and wordpress, I only learn how to enable session in the wp-config.php file. However, I was not able to find any information about retrieving session variables.
I want to get user login name from user session and then pass it to a perl script file.
