Role Restriction Posts/Pages?

Is it possible to set up users whether directly with WP or via a plugin that can only edit certain posts?

For example a school website, the headmaster can only update and change certain posts or pages?

Ideally in WP3 set up a custom post for an area and only an assigned user can edit or post in that section?

Can this be done or are you just stuck with the admin, editor etc type roles…?
