I am using PayPal standard with the authorise payment option. This works fine for completed orders, however, we are noticing canceled orders having their status changed to failed.

When an order is canceled does WooCommerce notify PayPal to automatically void the authorization? Do I have to log in to PayPal and do this manually?

Hey @katemacmillan,

WooCommerce can process refunds in two ways: Automatic and Manual. For automatic refunds, you have to make sure that your API settings are set and you’d want to test your payment gateway and refunds while in sandbox or test mode:

So if a customer cancels their order (or we cancel it) after authorizing payment, but before payment is captured, we have to do a refund to cancel the PayPal authorization?

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back.

If the payment was not captured there is no refund to make on PayPal. However, you’d want to check your PayPal dashboard for funds that may have been credited and thus to be refunded to the customer.
