Hi there. I’ve been getting the 503 “Your access to this site has been limited by the site owner” error regularly for three weeks (on two sites). The error occurs when I’m logged in and navigating around my site, but also when I’m not logged into WordPress. Even though I get the error, I can click the back arrow in the browser and continue navigating the site.

When I check the Wordfence Live Traffic I can see myself sign in successfully (sometimes at my actual IP and sometimes at a random IP), and when I’m blocked it shows me at a different IP.

My initial rate settings were set to unlimited, however I’ve changed them to those recommended in your documentation — Still getting the 503 error.

I’ve been in touch with my hosting provider and they’ve been unable to replicate the problem. The hosting provider doesn’t use a frontend proxy, doesn’t use Nginx and my domain isn’t utilizing a CDN service. They also haven’t performed a migration to another server (which helped someone in a similar forum post).

In case it’s helpful, the sites are built using Oxygen Builder.

Thanks in advance for your help! I’ve never had this in 2+ years.

    Hi @kmat19cs

Do the timestamps at the bottom of the block page closely match?

If the Generated by Wordfence timestamp is a significant time in the past then you likely have a caching mechanism caching our block pages when it should definitely not be doing that.

Also, I would like to have a look at your Wordfence diagnostics report. Please go to the top of the “Diagnostics” tab on the Wordfence “Tools” page. There will be a “SEND REPORT BY EMAIL” button to send the diagnostics report. Enter wftest [at] wordfence [dot] com as the email and kmat19cs as the forum username please.

Once you have emailed me the diagnostics report can you reply here to let me know that it has been sent. This is important in the unlikely event that your installation of WordPress is having an issue with sending mail.

Hi @wfphil thanks for your quick response. I just got the 503 error again and there was only 1 second difference in times on the timestamp (19:41:16 GMT vs 19:41:17 GMT). This was the same time difference as on Friday when I was last working on the site.

I just emailed you the diagnostics report.

    Thanks again!

    Hi @kmat19cs

    Thank you for the update.

You can find your IP address below (note that this detection is not 100% accurate on cellular phone network connections):

    https://whatismyipaddress.com/

Make a note of your IP address.

In the How does Wordfence get IPs subsection of the General Wordfence Options section on the All Options page you will need to set and save the option Use the X-Real-IP HTTP header. Only use if you have a front-end proxy or spoofing may result.

Make sure to save the change.

Do you see your correct IP address on the line Your IP with this setting?

Hi again @wfphil, thanks for the new instructions!

I did what you said, and when I select the “X-Real-IP HTTP header” option is does indeed show my correct IP.

Did my host give me wrong info when they said they don’t use a front-end proxy? Or is this option safe regardless?

I’d previously looked at these options and found that sometimes when I click the “recommended” option it shows my actual IP, but other times (usually) it shows random ones.

    Thanks for your ongoing help!

    Hi @kmat19cs

    Thank you for the update.

It does appear that your hosting provider does use a proxy server that sits in front of your Apache web server.

The X-Real-IP setting is safe as Wordfence is now correctly detecting your correct IP address and should continue to do so.

    Hi @wfphil

Thank you so much for your help resolving this!!

I’ve been playing around with the site today and haven’t seen the 503 error 🙂

I’ll get in touch with the hosting provider and update them on the solution too.

    Cheers!
