Minimizing redirects

I’ve noticed Polylang has introduced a 301 redirect to my website:

mywebsite.com/mypage -> mywebsite.com/en/mypage

I suppose this is because I’m using the setting “The language is set from the directory name in pretty permalinks”. Is there a way of setting the plugin up to minimize the redirects? At the moment the redirect is adding 700ms to my page load time!
