Hey @ronald1981
Thank you for reaching out!
Would you mind giving a specific URL of an event where this is happening?
I am unable to reproduce at the moment, but would love to!
Hang in there!
Geoff
Hey @geoffbel.
Thank you for your reaction.
My calendar works fine.
Only one problem with exporting to Google calendar.
Link to event:
https://ronaldijmker.nl/event/kerstconcert-crk-voices/
When I want to export it with the link for Google Calendar, I can do that.
But, when I take a look in the calendar itself (when export is done, on Google) I see this:
Example Google Calendar
I think it has something to do with the text encoding.
Is there a way to edit this in the php script?
(and, as extra: is it possible to make the export links (google and ical) open in a new tab?
Greetz,
Ronald
@ronald1981 thank you for writing back.
On my end, clicking on the Google export link opens up Google Calendar and looks like this.
My test settings:
- Windows 10
- English US
- Google account language = English
- Google Chrome and Firefox
To your point, it does look like an encoding issue.
My best guess would be at the OS, browser, or even Google Calendar account settings level.
I am assuming you are not using some other type of software to add the event to Google Calendar (in which case we also need to look at that).
At any rate, the good news is that you can customize pretty much anything in our calendar, I would recommend checking out this article to get started.
Finally, opening up the link in a new tab makes a ton of sense, I opened a ticket for that enhancement and will let you know when it’s released.
Let us know what you find,
Geoff
Hey Geoff,
Thank you for your answer.
The way your screenshot looks, is the same as here. That is before you save the event.
(maybe good to notice at this point: there are no enters in the description text of the event. On my site there are, but in your screenshot, all text is following up. When i make the enters again (when editing the event in the calendar before saving (as it is during that screenshot of you), there isn’t any problem).
The problem is the encoding after you export the event (without enters), and save it in google calendar. Once it’s saved there, there is something wrong:
(example after saving export)
The image shows the event, when it is saved in Google calendar.
It doesn’t matter, when I’m using Firefox/chrome/mobile phone/etc. On every possible device the event is saved in a unusual way.
The tokens like ‘-‘ etc are replaced by html codes.
About the new tab: Great! I’m really interested in the solution!
Greetings,
Ronald
@ronald1981 Good news!
The bug fix is here! Please update your plugins and let us know how it goes.
Thanks for your patience while we worked on this.

Hey James!
Thank you for your answer.
I’ve updated the plugin.
Problem is still there, but I think we’re getting close.
If I type a ‘-‘, it shows ‘-‘ in the editor.
No problems so far.
But when I look at the event in a browser (just before saving it in the calendar itself), the short ‘-‘ is showed as a long one: ‘–’
After exporting to Google Calendar, the ‘–’ (long one) is replaced with this code: –
If I change the long into a short one (in Google calendar, before saving the event in my calendar), all is well, and looks perfect!
So I think, there is something going wrong with exporting the special tokens.
Greetings,
Ronald

Hello @highprrrr and @geoffbel.
I just received a message, that there was another new update.
Now it’s going wrong…
The link seems to be a sort of copy of the iCal link.
If I want to export to the Google calendar, the event can be made, (and looks ok!), but can only be seen in the web-version on Google.
It does not show the normal add-to-calendar screen, but it only asks for a confirmation.
The event does not show up in the Calendar app, of another calender linked-app.
Even stranger: it is not possible to delete (it says I don’t have rights to delete it) or edit the event afterwards in the Calendar itself… It can only be copied to another logged-in-account there… After I press copy, it shows the normal add-event-screen, that is normally shown… After copying, the events looks perfect in the Google Calendar.
(Note: If i check my google calendar settings, there is a new calendar shown (in my case, my own name. That calendar is added to my normal one. That exelains the issue of not showing up in my app, because that particular calendar is not selected there…).
Long story written here…
To get short:
I think there is something wrong with the export link (iCal instead of Google)…
Greets,
Ronald

The things are getting worse.
The Google-calendar link is still in ics format (same link as to iCalendar).
And now also an extra piece of text (‘export as ics file’) is shown.
The last two updates did not fix the problems…

Hi Ronald!
Are you still experiencing issues with this?
Testing locally, the Google calendar link seems to be working as expected for me.
Looking at the events on your site, I am not seeing the “add to calendar” links any more.
If you are still having this issue, can you tell me if you are still able to reproduce when temporarily switching to the Twenty Twenty theme and disabling all other plugins besides the Events Calendar?
Best,
Sky
Hello Sky,
I’ve chosen to get rid of the links to export the calendars.
I’ve changed some things in de CSS, so the export links don’t show up anymore.
All works fine now. Export function was a nice function, but none of my users ever used the function.
The event pages itself look a lot better (less links, better viewing) now…
Greetings,
Ronald
Hi again,
OK great! Glad you were able to find a workaround.
If you ever decide you need the export functionality again, give the troubleshooting steps a try to see if it could be a theme or plugin conflict. If not, we can continue trying to help figure out the problem.
Best,
Sky
