Ok… I have followed the instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP to Install WordPress Locally on my Mac With MAMP… when I get up to Step 4: Downloading and Installing WordPress… I follow the instructions and when I go to “Visit your local site (localhost:port or localhost:port/wordpress)” I get the error message “Safari can’t open the specified address” – what am I doing wrong?

I hope this is enough info… let me know if you need to know more.

Exactly what URL are you trying in Safari? http://localhost:8888/mywordpressfolder/wp-admin/install.php ?

I am a newbie. after installing Xamp successfully, I noticed there’s WEMP and LMP as well.

Before I go on, which one is the best considering my situation? i have window XP SP3 laptop with 512 mb

Also, (assuming I keep this download) when I was on the XAMP site I went to phpadmin which asked me for password. I typed in the passwords that I documented for the SAMP download non worked. What then are they referring to?

I’m having the same problems as the person who started this post. We are operating on macs so although thoughtful the last post doesn’t apply..

I can access the localhost website but im not sure where to get the information to fill in the spaces: database name, user name etc.

    thanks

@jborer, You need to be more specific: are you using MAMP, XAMPP or rolling your own with the built in Apache server in OSX?

@ songdogtech I was using MAMP and actually got it to work…Then i accidently deleted my users and now only error messages come up when i attempt to access the php tab. ANYWAY….

Maybe you can give me some better advice…

I know NOTHING about this kind of stuff. I am attempting to make a personal website to serve as a method of advertising myself to prospective employers, graduate schools etc. I want to include links for my resume and other portfolio documents. I obviously want to do this as cheaply, easily, and aesthetically pleasing as possible, but it doesn’t have to be complex. I already have my domain name (easy part), any advice as to what to do next.

Thank you so much for your help.

Installing locally on your Mac is completely different then either wordpress.com or self-hosting wordpress and completely unnecessary for what you want to do. Either go to wordpress.com for a free blog and point your domain to it, or see this to install WordPress yourself: Installing WordPress « WordPress Codex
