subscriber lost password

A friend of mine who is registered as a “subscriber” with my WP blog is having a hard time login to his account. I keep getting this message from WordPress at my domain, “Password Lost and Changed for user: ke9djx”, but I don’t know what to do to fix this problem for him. Since I didn’t issue his initial password, I don’t know if WordPress now wants me to issue him a new one. What should I do about this? This is a big nuisance for both of us. We have been trying for two days to fix this problem.
