Functions() for media uploading/handling?

    Are there functions that can be used in plugins for uploading and handling media? I can’t find anything in the function reference, codex or forums.

    I am writing a plugin that gets photos from Flickr but I want them uploaded to WordPress and “processed” (according to the Media Settings, i.e. size variations).

    Are there functions for uploading (from URL)?

    Has anyone hacked the WP core and found the functions that actually effect the upload and processing (e.g. resizing, adding to media database)?

    Did you try to check any plugin? I guess you can use someone to help you. I am used to check other plugins to help me when I need create another one.
