Refused to Connect
-
I can’t figure this out. Our website is on Godaddy, but our email is the cpanel email on Inmotion (because GoDaddy blocks secure SMTP on shared hosting). So, we can connect to the email accounts on inmotion. They can send and receive. We can connect Gmail and THunderbird to them, both incoming and outgoing are Aok. But I can’t get the website to connect through this app! I’m losing my mind. It says connection refused. Both Inmotion and Godaddy say they are not block anything.

Hi @rscarter1,
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble connecting. Can you paste a copy of your Post SMTP diagnostic log in your next reply and I’ll see what we can do for you. π
Kind Regards,
TimSo, basically I read that Godaddy blocks all outgoing connections to port 25, 465, and 587 except to their own servers. I got back on with Godaddy help and they said yes, it is being blocked, and pointed me to this page:
https://uk.godaddy.com/help/send-form-mail-using-an-smtp-relay-server-953Hi @rscarter1,
Ah, yes, I do remember this. Personally not a fan of that security policy – but I can understand their reasoning.
Can you send me a copy of your Post SMTP diagnostics log from your WP install, please? It will enable me to see your set up and guide you to the best route forward.
Kind Regards,

Hi @rscarter1,
Thanks for this. So as GoDaddy require you to use their mail relay server (see the guide you linked me to) – here are the changes you should make. I am listing these as they are shown in the ‘Show All Settings’ option.
Transport
- Type: SMTP
- Mailer Type: PostSMTP
Transport Settings
- Outgoing Mail Server Hostname: localhost
- Outgoing Mail Server Port: 25
- Envelope-From Email Address: (your email – I suspect it has to be one in your GoDaddy hosting account)
- Security: None
- Authentication: None
Hope this helps. Please let me know if that connects okay.
Good luck! π
Kind Regards,
TimDoesn’t work because our MX records are pointed to the new host. π
Oh, the woes of GoDaddy email.Oh —– localhost
That works!Hi @rscarter1,
I don’t like GoDaddy either – but I’m biased, I manage and sell hosting! π
Seriously though: Glad
localhostis working for you. Is Post SMTP now running correctly on your site?Kind Regards,
TimIt is, thank you. I will mark as resolved. You’re the best.
Thanks @rscarter1, appreciate the kind words. π
So glad we resolved this in under 2 hours – has to be a record!
If you need anything else, please feel free to create a new thread and either me or the developer will respond as soon as possible.
All the best!
Kind Regards,
TimNice one Tim.
This would make a good FAQ or pinned post somewhere!
Had the same issue with a client the other day. Don’t you love that shudder you get when you hear “GoDaddy”!!
Good point @shinerweb, yes. I guess it will affect all GoDaddy users which is probably a large portion of users (whether that’s good or bad, I’ll let you draw your own conclusion!)
I’ll speak to Yehuda and see what we can do, for now, I’ll create a sticky here in a moment.
There are other hosting companies in the same family which are heading in the same direction. It’s becoming a real problem for a lot of small businesses as their platforms are quite…unique!
Anyway! Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it.
Kind Regards,
TimOh, actually, @shinerweb or @rscarter1 – does the email you’re sending from have to be the same domain as your hosting account to use the GoDaddy SMTP relay?
It would be good to confirm before I post the sticky.
Kind Regards,
Tim@tneville – thankfully, I persuaded the clients to bypass using GoDaddy mail relaying and hosted the mail servers elsewhere.
I know you know, but most users don’t realise that even though they’ve paid up front for their GoDaddy hosting doesn’t prevent them from splitting email away from web services for next to no cost for most GoDaddy users.
GoDaddy also have a pretty low limit of 500 mails per day when using their relay on their basic plans. Including system mails (not just mails to visitors/sales etc) can often exceed the daily limits on even a relatively low traffic site.
