replace search functions

Hi,

I’m looking to replace the search functions in wordpress. I don’t want to search the wordpress tables but I have other tables in my database I’d like to search and use wordpress to display them.

Where might I start, can the search functions be overridden easly? As all my google searches are just showing my how to change the search results/display but not the data to search.
