WordPress over existing website

Hi all,

I know I should read some more info on this forum before posting this, but nevertheless I feel free to start with a question (might save time).

I have a website ( http://www.rogerbraun.nl ) made with a program called Swishmax. Now I want a less static website. A website than I can easily update every day. WordPress seems the right medium to do so.

But, with WordPress, can I start creating a website/blog on my domain while my ‘old’ website can still be visited? Or is it so, that once I intalled WordPress on this domain, that the WordPress-site is what visitors will see?

Reason of this question: I want my ‘old’ website to be visible while I try to figure out WordPress.

Or, is it possible to create a WordPress website/blog offline and than publish it when I feel that it looks the way I want?
