How do I do this: Please move the YARPP template files into your theme to complete installation. Simply move the sample template files (currently in wp-content/plugins/yet-another-related-posts-plugin/yarpp-templates/) to the /home/mdh313/public_html/insomniasimplysucks.com/wp-content/themes/thesis_16 directory.

I’m doing this in cpanel. I can get to where I need to go, but I can’t figure out how to move the file from the left side to the right side.

I called Hostgator, but the person I talked to didn’t help. Maybe I couldn’t explain it well enough to him.

  • I know how to move files. What I would like some help with is how you fix up the site access after you’ve moved the files! Beginner me had put my WordPress website files loose in public_html instead of public_html/domain’s folder. I need them in the domain’s folder because I also have two other domains in public_html which will have their own WordPress website files.
But of course having moved the files the website won’t come up. So I had to put them back for now.
Big question is: do I need to start all over again, or can I just change a name of something somewhere so that WordPress can access my moved files and my website will come up on the internet?
    thanks everyone…

Hi James, you’re on deck again – thanks.
Last night I got quite a long way thanks to you: site set up, lots of tweaks, links, etc. Starting to feel my way around a bit. Thanks again.

    You’re welcome!

I’m looking around that Moving WordPress codex, and just don’t understand. The WordPress address and Site address of my site are both the same: the registered domain name that I have and want. They are just http://www.mydomain.com. They do not contain the current location info – /home/account name/public_html/ so why would I have to change them? If I change them in General Settings, won’t that mean the url of my website as seen on the internet be different? Not what I want. The files are only being moved within public_html from loose to a sub-folder of public_html. I’m really stuck on this one…

If the files for http://www.mydomain.com are located at /home/account name/public_html/ and you wanted to move your WordPress installation to /home/account name/public_html/blog/ (for example), you’d need to change the two URLs in Settings/General to http://www.mydomain.com/blog/ because that’s where the blog would be located after moving the files.

The files are currently in home/diannet/public_html
and they are called in General Settings:
    WordPress address = http://cells2universes.com
    Site address = http://cells2universes.com

I want to move them to home/diannet/public_html/www.cells2universes.com
where the last part (same as the domain name) is actually the name of the folder within public_html

So does that mean in General Settings I have to rename them to:
    WordPress address = http://cells2universes.com/www.cells2universes.com
    Site address = http://cells2universes.com/www.cells2universes.com ?

If you move the files to home/diannet/public_html/www.cells2universes.com then the URL will unfortunately be http://cells2universes.com/www.cells2universes.com

However, you can contact your hosting provider and ask them to set the domain root for http://cells2universes.com to home/diannet/public_html/www.cells2universes.com

Then, all of your WordPress files can be moved to home/diannet/public_html/www.cells2universes.com and they will still appear as http://cells2universes.com

OK, looks like the long way round. I’ll contact them. Big lesson in setting up the directory correctly from the start. Of course one does not always know what will need to be changed….

If you’re still there James, another Q for the future. When I build tne next WordPress website, I want it to remain unpublished for a few months until I’m ready to launch it. So it will be in public_ftp while being prepared. When I need to move it into public_html to launch it on the web, does that mean I have to go through the name change drama with it too?

    Moderator James Huff

    (@macmanx)

You can’t build it in public_ftp. That directory is for file storage only and can’t serve web pages.

Instead, build it wherever you plan on launching it. Go to Settings/Privacy in the admin panel and select “I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors,” then install and activate this plugin:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/registered-users-only/

When you’re ready to launch it, simply deactivate the Registered Users Only plugin, then go to Settings/Privacy in the admin panel and select “I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers.”
