• I am currently using StartLogic to host my blog but am running into more problems that I care to think about. I am getting CGI scripting errors all over the place and it has been over 3 weeks since it has been updated by them. I have asked them 4 times what the status is and nothing is being done.

So I am looking for a new host. any suggestions? The only thing that I NEED is for it to be a Windows machine running IIS for some back end stuff that my company does. I have 6 website that I will be moving away from StartLogic and its a shame since I have been a customer of theirs for 7 years (1 year less than they have been in business). We don’t get a lot of traffic (probably 200-500 hits a day) but the visitors we do get are very important to us so I need a great service.

I’d suggest NOT GoDaddy (I’ve heard nothing but drama about their Windows hosting with regards to WordPress).

Honestly, you’re going to be on the short-end of support as most of us here use Apache/*Nix for our hosts. With six websites (6 domains?) I’d think you’d want a VPS to host ’em all on, but you’re pretty much going to have to hit up google and ask each host, directly, if they’re good for what you need.

Yeah, I personally would rather use Apache/Linux (which I do on most of the sites) but I have one for my company that we need SQL and .NET so that pretty much rules that out. 🙁

I was thinking about Dream Host because I haven’t heard anything bad about them but I don’t know.

The first web site I ever built (in 1995) was for the local office of an organization that self-hosted me and 100+ other offices across North America.

A year ago, they moved to DreamHost and it was pretty much the worst decision in their history. DreamHost took six months (of frequent and lengthy outages) to move their Data Centre. But, it didn’t get better after the move, maybe even worse.

I really like these guys, and have been using them for a year. But only with Linux. Check out these services, which offer .NET and MS SQL Server:

I chose their Reseller (not ASP and not PRO) plan to give me a strong level of isolation between my web sites. And especially the test sites. I also liked the fact that (unlike some of their other plans) there are limits on bandwidth and web space, which means I’m not going to get blindsided by another user on the same web server running either huge traffic or adding a terabyte of movies to his site.

Dunno about the hardware on their other plans, but I’m running on a state of the art machine with 8 Quad Core Intel processors.

My standard advice is to search for the hostname on the forums of the app you want to use.

Count the screams and the yays. Subtract people who post 90 million times with ‘This sucks!’ and nothing helpful. Divide by the times host support comes to the forums to help. Multiply by the work-arounds people here sort out.

Arvixe looks kind of nice with their reseller option. That might be something I would like to look into personally. This would keep a constant cash flow coming in to me from people I design websites for. Why pay a hosting company all that money when they could pay me.

Do I have my thinking right here?
-$8 per month average for hosting with any host which goes to the company.

    Arvixe:
-I pay them $25 a month (for the lower reseller class)
-I charge my clients whatever I want a month.
-I handle everything but the technical back end that Arvixe covers?

    That sounds to simple.

Oops, I just read this, which I wasn’t previously aware of:
    http://www.arvixe.com/iis7_hosting
Be sure to take a look.

For ResellerPro, I pay between $16-$18 a month by paying a year in advance ($5/month less), using a readily-available discount coupon (just Google for a 10% discount coupon, but valid for the first year only), and including a link to Arvixe on my master domain name (the one registered to the main reseller account, another 10%, paid as a credit each month). And factoring in the one free domain name registration you get each year ($9.95/year value). They also pay nice commissions if you do sell their (as opposed to your) accounts to others.

I don’t believe Arvixe will support your customers directly, though they certainly could use the support forums. And, of course, the on-line documentation.

Only thing that took me a while to get used to was that you cannot Oversell. In other words, the SUM of the maximum bandwidth and space allocations you give to each subaccount cannot exceed the 50GB space, 500GB month bandwidth limits.

For the record, I selected Arvixe a year ago based on one or two sites that track uptime. And the number of VALID complaints about Arvixe I found. I ignored stuff like “I tried to sell downloads of pirated software and MP3s on my site and they booted me off without notice (and refunded my money).”

They will work with you if you do some testing that creates runaway tasks, but only after suspending that subaccount. I have, instead, opted to do any potentially runaway testing locally on my own workstation at home.

To simplify my life, I also transferred all my (clients’, etc.) 20+ domain name registrations to them. It is $7.95 to transfer a domain name (which includes a one year renewal, but $9.95 to register or renew for one year.

I agree with Ipstenu, have a look around and see what is happening. Don’t rely too much on things that are a year, or several years, old as things may have changed for better or for worse since then.

    Have someone used Justhost ?
I am gonna to buy it ’cause cheap price and wordpress support ( not for commercial website )

    thanks !

No, I don’t know anything about JustHost, but Arvixe is only 5 cents a month more if you pay in advance for two years:
    http://www.arvixe.com/linux_web_hosting

    Thanks Adidant !
It’s interesting, more choices for me !

It’s only one person’s opinion, but I have known a few people with justhost, and they were disappointed and left, but then I have seen the same with many hosts, including hosts that I have found to be very good. For that reason I don’t like host-bashing and agree fully with what Ipstenu previously said. I am personally hosted with BlueHost, have been for years, and am still loving it.
