I updated wordpress yesterday and now I cant login to my site through wordpress. When I do it says ‘There has been a critical error on this website’.
When I look at the website in a browser, the heading title, menu and headings of the sidebar show, but there is no content on any of the pages.
I have used control panel file manger to rename the plugin directory with no effect. I also renamed the theme the site uses and that results in a completely blank page. So I have reverted back to the correct theme name and the site is back to no content.

It may be that another user was logged in when the update was done

    Can anyone help please

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

-can you check in the database to see if the content is still present for the posts/pages?
-do you have more than 1 theme installed? (i.e. Neve and Twenty Twenty)
-do you have a backup of your database and files to restore your site?

    Thanks fir the reply
I don’t know how to check the database
I do have two themes installed
I have a backup of the site, using updraftplus. however it is backed up on the site, so I guess I would need to copy that to my local machine

does your webhosting vendor offer access to an area called PHPMYADMIN
often the database is available in that area
(there is a table wp_posts in the database that contains the content for pages, posts, custom post types and attachments of your website)

Yes it does have phpmyadmin. Under the structure tab, there is wpkf_posts

That’s great news if you found the posts table.
Is the content still present in your posts?

there is reference in the table to the sites pages and content. I have not checked every line of the table.
I do have the content elsewhere, so at a push I could re-enter the text. Its the media that would be a big job, as there are a lot of documents.

I was wondering if I should download the latest version of WordPress to my computer and upload the files to my site via FTP or control panel file manager. I assume that I should not over write wp-content

I have solved the issue. Downloaded the latest version of wordpress. I then over wrote all of the downloaded files and folders except wp_content on my site, using FTP.

The site now works and all the content is intact
