• Hi, I’ve got a blog on my Business Pro website and haven’t upgraded since starting it over two years ago.

    When I enquired a couple of years ago about the first upgrade my webmaster said:

    To install a new script from your host control panel, the directory need to be empty. This means either creating a new directory, of deleting all from your existing directory – which means deleting your blog. This is the wrong procedure just to update.

    There should be instructions with on the wordpress site how to upgrade your blog, keeping all current data intact.

    I didn’t want to risk losing the blog, so I haven’t bothered since. I’m still okay with the present blog, but would prefer a newer version if possible.

    Any suggestions and info appreciated. Cheers.

  • you won’t ever lose your blog as long as you have a back up of your database?
    you should do this frequently

    my recommendation would be to upgrade incrementally
    2.3.1 -> 2.5.1 -> 2.7.1 -> 2.9.2
    I would deactivate all plugins 1st and switch to the default theme
    I would download any themes you want to keep to your desktop to save them as a back up – some or all may not be compliant with the newer version. also, I would download my wp-config.php for safe keeping in case you don’t follow the instructions carefully. :>)
