Attribute Title with wildcards

A client would like a series of attributes named like:

A
*A
**A

(I am not ask why, only to … you get the idea.)

Anyway, not having much luck with any hooks so I’ve been looking at save_attributes() in class-wp-ajax.php

Am I close, or did I miss something before I start to look at core files?
