• When I make changes to my theme and upload them, the files are changed on the server, but they do not appear in the browser.

    What I have tried:

    • Emptying my cache, alternate browsers, etc.
    • Activating a different theme and reactivating my customized theme.
    • Making changes to the default WP themes, they do not take either.
    • Disabling my plugins and making theme changes. (My Plugins are Akismet and Disable Canonical URL Redirection)

    What works:
My theme changes only apply when I duplicate my theme folder, rename it, make the changes I want, then upload that theme and switch to it.

    Setup

    • My WP version is 2.8.4 (which was not available when I wrote this post)

  • Have you tried waiting to see if the changes are available in 20-30mins? I have a client who’s hosting provider appears to operate an internal web cache. CSS changes can take 20 mins to appear unless I first delete the file and then upload the new version. Over-writing just doesn’t work.

    esmi,

I made changes to footer.php and waited over an hour and the changes did not display on the site.

I tried deleting footer.php on the remote server, then making a change to it locally, then uploading the new footer.php. The result was that while the file was absent, on the site it was absent. After I uploaded the changed footer.php, it displayed the footer unchanged. I don’t know anything about hosting caching but the files are definitely being remembered somewhere.

Thing is, if I change my CSS files within the theme, or an HTML page somewhere else on the server, those changes are reflected immediately. It is only my WordPress stuff that behaves this way.

Could it still be an issue with my hosting setup or did that just get rule out?

A week after the day I first noticed this issue, it no longer seems to be occurring. It is possible that the issue will return as easily as it disappeared. I’m reluctant to call this topic “resolved” because I did not discover the source of the issue.

I’ll be back if I have more info 🙂

Why not drop your host an email and ask them directly whether they run some form of caching system on their servers.

You should also consider it being the computer you’re using, confirm if the problem arises when using an alternative computer (even if for the sake of two minutes – when the problem is present of course).

Both very simple things to check, and should narrow down the possibilities…
