Displaying Parent Pages Only

I am trying to display only the parent categories on my blog

Along these same lines I have changed my category-template code so that depth equals 1 and it is still showing a child category.

In my theme “simple green”, the children show up as parents, with no indentation and below all the other parents, so I think it is treating children like parents

Any ideas here?
