• I am not very computer literate an am currently trying to keep my wordpress site going after my web designer left me. I have two questions that someone may be able to steer me in the right direction. My domain name registration is still under the web designers name. He has agreed to transfer it to me but states,”you need to have the hosting setup and site files copied over before April”. I have no idea how to do that and how can I find a wordpress expert to help me.
Secondly, my site is still under janicetranejones.com/wordpress and I want it to just be a .com. Can I change it prior to the domain transfer? I appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks.

However, I should point out that a domain name transfer is not dependant upon acquiring new hosting. Your web designer had no right to register your domain under his name and he has no right to refuse to transfer it to you immediately. He can also transfer copies of your theme and plugins plus a copy of your database to you now. If you wish to pursue this issue, you may want to seek legal advice.

Can you ask the old website designer to do the transfer for you? I’m assuming that the costs wont be that much and yes esmi has something there. Your developer is not allowed to register your domain name under his name. He can include his name as support contact but not the owner.

If you use this tool, it should provide you with info on who owns the domain: http://www.whois.net
