• Let’s see if I can put this succinctly:
I’m trying to find the most efficient way to put together a complicated (to me) blogging set-up. I have varied interests (eg music, writing, athletics) and I want to write about all of them. I notice in my own reading that I do not read generalist blogs. Instead, I prefer they focus on one topic. So I had been planning on creating a different blog for each of my interests, hosted in subdomains of my main domain. That way people could subscribe to feeds w/ high signal/low noise according to their interests.

However, I’d like to have the overall homepage be a page with some sticky text and the latest post from each blog. (Can this be done?)

My question: Would it make more sense to install one WP blog, make the subdomain pages generate based on individual categories (and have distinct category feeds), and then have the overall homepage list most recent posts in each category rather than from distinct blogs?

Apologies if this is longwinded or makes little sense.

  • Makes sense to me. Wish I could help. Maybe someone else can.

I think it depends on your audience and your traffic. Also on how much you want to differentiate between your different interests. If it’s important to have very strong differentiation then you might choose separate subdomains. Personally, I think this approach will complicate management and greatly add to the time you spend just on administration, rather than creating content.

I have a setup that has one main blog site and three subsites in separate directories. So yes that can be done.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that multiple installs over multiple subdomains seems like it would create much complicated admin time. The only question remaining for me is, Can I do what I’m thinking of with only one install?

Would you post the url of your site so I can check out what you’ve done?

    Thanks.

Why not give WP MU a try.

I guess ChellyCat is referring to:

    http://mu.wordpress.org/

    which stands for: multi-user
