Front page setting

Can you normally change the default front page of themes?
I found in the “reading” subpage of settings that it can either display the latest posts or a static page. I want it to be a static page, don’t want a blog. However, once I choose “static page” I need to select one of the pages I have created. As a consequence the same content will be displayed both by clicking “home” and the selected page. Can I trash the default home page and create a new one? Or is there a way to edit its content? The list of pages in my dashboard does only display the pages I have created and not the default home page.
