Issue with disallowed tags

    Hi,

    We recently start using YARPP and are facing an issue with disallowed tags.

    Basically we have set up a special tag “expired” so when we add it to a post this post should be excluded from related posts everywhere.

    But what we found out is that, after adding the tag, posts that were already linking to the excluded post are still linking to it.

    If we change something in the config or update the post linking to the excluded one the related posts are recalculated and it’s working fine. But if not it looks like the related posts are not refreshed and all the concept of expiration doesn’t work (unless we manually clear the cache every other day).

    What would you recommend to tackle this?

    Hi @hmcit, nice to digitall meet you! Yes that’s not reasonable to have to update every other post. I think it’s a bug that when you change the tags or categories on a post, it doesn’t clear YARPP’s cached recommendations.

    We have an upcoming version that, from my testing, fixes the issue. Would you like to try it before we make it live? Here’s how:

    1. Download the new version from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18XA2WAU0qajA8U_GxHwJGQn4Gzac683j/view?usp=sharing
    2. Go to your WordPress dashboard, click plugins, then “add new”, then “upload” and select the zip file you just downloaded
    3. Deactivate the previous version of YARPP
    4. Activate the new version of YARPP

    Now when you add that tag onto a post, it should immediately be removed as a recommendation on other posts (without needing to update each post).

    Does that make sense? If you’re able to test, please let me know how it goes. If you’re not comfortable trying the upcoming version, that’s understandable.

    Hi @mnelson4, thank you for your fast answer and nice to digitally meet you too.

    I’ve tried the new version but unfortunately it doesn’t fix the issue.

    To reproduce:
    – I have a tag ‘expired’ created and disallowed in the plugin config
    – I open one post and enter one of the related posts
    – I edit the related post, add the expired tag and save the post
    – I refresh the original post and the related post still appear
    – If I update the original post then the related content is recalculated and the related post with the tag ‘expired’ disappears.

    Also do you guys have a public Github that accepts pull requests? Because we’ve made a small customization that could be shared with everyone and integrated in the official plugin.

    Hi @hmcit, sorry I forgot about this issue during the holiday shuffle.

    I’m not sure why this new version (5.11.1) isn’t working for you. It sounds like we’re doing the same thing. I made a short video showing what I’m doing: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jLUsnyrlNOXn00cb0iZmz5dBy_pTBWFY/view

    * setup YARPP to exclude posts with the tag “aaah-exclude”
    * add a new post
    * view the new post. Click on one of its related posts
    * add teh tag “aaah-exclude” to that related post and update the related post
    * refresh the first post and find the other post updated with “aaah-exclude” is no longer related

    Do you see anything different between what we’re doing?

    If not, maybe you could send me a screenshare of what you’re doing in case there might be some clues in a video I’m not getting through text. Also sending your YARPP settings might help. Here’s how:

    To send us YARPP debug info,
    1. From WordPress admin dashboard, under “Settings” click “YARPP”
    2. Click “Help” in the top-right corner
    3. Click “Optional Data Collection” tab on the left
    4. Copy all the monospaced text

    Lastly, no we don’t currently have a public GitHub repo for YARPP. For now, to send us code you could post a zip file of your modified plugin (eg put it on dropbox or google drive and share the link). I know it’s a bit tedious.

    YARPP should automatically do this instead of having to update the other posts right? I’m running into the same issue.

    I sell music on my website and when I sell an instrumental I put it in the “Sold” category which I have checked in the YARPP settings under Disallow by Categories. But when I add a post to the “Sold” category it’s still showing under posts it previously showed under. The only way to fix this is to go to each of those posts and update them.

    Hey @sho-down ya it sounds like you’re having the same issue. Have you tried the version of YARPP linked-to above? If not, would you mind trying the instructions I gave here and see if it works for you? I found it fixed the issue but @hmcit found it didn’t so it would be nice to have another tester.
