Try reuploading all your wordpress files and folders again; some may have not uploaded all the way the first time.
I have a very similar problem. I am hosted on 1and1. They say that we must have a file called index.html in the root (/) directory. I have put wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes in /, but the only index.html file has nothing to do with WordPress! Where have I gone wrong?

I have tried to download WP one more time and reuploaded it without any change.
I have also tried to do the installation in a new and empty subdirectoy instead of in the root, but the same things happens.
Even if the step two and three aren’t executed the database are created with the admin user. The blogg is also created, but I don’t have any password which should have been displayed in step two. I have tried the “lost password” but it isn’t returning anything.
I appreciate any help because this is time consuming and frustrating.
@timbertoe: start a new thread with the 1and1 hosting issue.
@stacia: who is your host, and are you on windows or linux hosting?

My host is One.com and I’m on Windows.

Sorry, it is probably linux hosting.
According to these forums, people don’t have much luck with one.com and wordpress. I’d either ask their support to help you, or find another linux host: Hosting WordPress Ā« WordPress Codex.

I have installed WP successfully for another domain on One.com earlier.

I have now done two things to search for a reason for this error.
First I uploaded and installed the same WP-files to a new domain where there never have been any files. This was successfull and WP was installed at once.
Then I deleted all files I have on my existing site so it was empty for all stuff, and uploaded the same files again. But the installation still fails.

I have talked to one.com and the only explanation they gave was that they have had some ustability on their servers. Today I gave it another try and it worked. š
Just to finish this thread off I guess, I too just had the same problem, and for me it was fixed by simply changing browser…
Went from Chrome to IE and worked fine :-S
Oh and I changed the db prefix in the wp-config file so I didn’t have to reupload everything.
