WRONG Order Status

Hey team,

a few weeks ago I posted a problem with the order status of some PayPal payments, which only occurred after updating WooCommerce.

I tried using both PDT and IPN exclusively – the problem didn’t go away.

Could you please help me with this?

the order status goes to ‘processing’ instead of ‘completed’ after successful payment. https://ibb.co/HxryppL
All products are marked as virtual and downloadable. And I’m using variable products. (Every product is available in 2 versions/variants)

Could you please share a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status.
Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, paste it here in your response.

Hey, were you able to look into it?

I found two more very odd things:

(1) I use product variations. A product is either “Standard” (variation 1) or “Mit Abschlusszertifikat” (variation 1). The orders that didn’t work properly didn’t have variation 1 or variation 2. Just the product without the variation. I don’t know how this is possible as the product isn’t available without one of the two variations.

(2) Exactly the orders that didn’t work are listet at: WooCommerce → Sendungen (should be “WooCommerce → Shipping” in English)

I want to make sure I understand you correctly.
Can you tell me more which PayPal plugin you’re using?

Hi Siew,

this is not a PayPal issue. I use Mollie Payments. But it doesn’t matter, as this is a core WooCommerce issue. It seems to be related to variable products / product versions. They are all messed up.

I use two versions of a product:
– Standard (79€)
– Mit Abschlusszertifikat (289€)

I noticed that the orders that have the issue don’t use either of the product versions. I don’t know how this is possible. The customer needs to select a product version. It is not possible to order a product without choosing between the product versions.

Prompt help would be greatly appreciated as this is going on for way too long now and really messing up the internal business.

UPDATE: I just received an order that’s affected again, but in a different way. It still has none of the versions mentioned above, but under the product it says “Mit Abschlusszertifikat”. The price was 79€ though and it didn’t use the correct version of “Mit Abschlusszertifikat” (which costs 289€). Please help – this is really bad.

In other words, your customers are able to order variable products without choosing a variation. After these orders are paid, the order status remains as processing, am I correct?

This kind of problem is usually caused by either a conflict with your theme or with another plugin.

The best way to determine this is to:

Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront
Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
Repeat the action that is causing the problem

If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated. To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each, until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

Hi Siew,

yes, you are correct.

Unfortunately, the typical conflict testing isn’t possible/practical here, as this problem only occurs with a small fraction of orders.

I’ve tested it a few times – when I ordered it always works. I’d probably have to order 100+ times to reproduce the issue.

With 40+ plugins, I’d have to make 4000+ test orders. Even then, we may still not be able to reproduce this issue.

There has to be a better way to find the reason for this weird behavior.
