role= XHTML Parms

    I have just installed WordPress and I notice that some of the XHTML tags are using a parameter role=”value” which is not a valid XHTML value. In fact when you click on the “Valid XHTML” link, it sends you to the W3C Validation Site which complains about this issue. Is this anything to worry about and what is the purpose of this parameter? Is it a proprietary tag that WP creates and uses (and thus can be ignored)?

    It’s a minor validation issue that is highly unlikely to impact on your site or its visitors but I appreciate that it can be annoying when you’re trying to aim for a valid site. It’s not a proprietary tag – simply one that isn’t in the XHTML 1.0 specification although it is valid on HTML5 pages.

    ESMI –

    Thank you for your reply and information on the significance of this tag parameter. As you guessed, I like having my sites valid and try to make sure that I am not playing Russian Roulette with Tag Soup. As it is, I do not like that my XHTML must be served as text/html in lieu of being flagged as an XML form (since among other reasons, IE does not support XHTML if not served as text/html).
