My blog is new, and I’ve just started receiving comments. I know these are very basic questions, but how do I “approve” of a comment, and how do I reply to a comment? One of the comments I received (via email for approval was in another language. Because I do not know this language and, therefore, what it says, I cannot approve it.

    I appreciate your feedback.

  • You can find the comments in your admin area. Login to your admin panel and look on the left column for comments. Click on it and you can see the comments and either approve or delete them.

First, I hope you have Akismet (or another Spam filter) set up. If not, that is the very next thing you need to do.

When you log in as Admin, click on the Comments choice as KellyH says to get to the ‘Edit Comments’ page.

Along the top of the page you should see ‘All | Pending | Approved | Spam ‘. Click on Pending to see comments waiting for your approval. Hover the mouse over a comment and you will see your editing choices.

My blog was actually set up by the pro I know who set up my web site. But I’m trying to learn how to maintain the blog myself. So, I’m going to follow your instructions about heading into Admin, etc.

But, (I know I should know this), first, how do I determine if I have a spam filter? And, next, if I do not, how to set one up?

    Thanks again.

For someone just starting, I recommend ‘WordPress for Dummies’. I started with it, and it was a great help.

To see if you are using Akismet, and possibly other Spam filters, Log in as admin. Click ‘Plugins’ in the right column. This should show a list of all installed plugins. Ones that are inactive will be greyed out. If you see one with a title that sounds like spam, you are probably protected.

Akismet should be in the list unless the person who set up your blog deleted it. If it is greyed out, follow the instructions in the link I posted above to get a key, and then activate it.

Following up a little on my earlier post, go to the ‘Edit Comments’ page and click on ‘Spam’ in the top line. This will show a list of all comments being held as spam. Once in a great while, a legitimate comment will be trapped and needs to be approved. Most often, you can just delete everything you find in the spam section.

Thanks so much for your feedback. Coincidentally, between my last posting and your follow-up book suggestion, I went to the book store and bought WordPress for Dummies.

    Thanks again.
