    Hi to all,

    I’d really appreciate some advice.

I have a couple of blogs on WordPress and have regularly backed them up. I upgraded to 2.9.1 today, and then tried to move my blog from one domain to another (on the same server).

I followed the step-by-step instructions on the Codex, but it went very wrong. Half-way through, I was locked-out of the admin area, so couldn’t complete the process. Now I can’t log in to my WordPress admin area (on the old URL or the new URL) and don’t know what’s going on. My site is no longer existent at either URL. This is bad timing personally, as I’m expecting traffic in the next few days. I’ve tried re-installing the WP software on the new URL, but this has no effect. I now realise that, despite backing-up to a local folder – I don’t actually know how to restore my site to its previous condition.

I’m using DreamHost, who have a one-click install. Is the upgrade to 2.9.1 related? Any advice desperately gratefully appreciated,

    Many thanks,
    D

  • If the blog was working after the upgrade, I doubt that was a problem. Might be, but probably not.

Do you have FTP access to the new domain? If so, try the emergecny password reset script, which is easier to use than phpmyadmin: Emergency_Password_Reset_Script « WordPress Codex. That should get you back into admin.

Did you change DNS from the old domain to the new domain, or did the new domain already exist?

You’re going to need to possibly change site URLs with phpmyadmin anyway at the new site, after you import the old database.

    Dear songdogtech,

Many thanks for the reply. I do have FTP access to both domains, but the problem is as follows:

The Codex said to change the Blog Address and URL. I did this from inside the settings page in the admin area on the old site. This means that all of the pages (including the log-in page) now point to the new URL.

Then it said to move all of the core files to the new folder, which I did. My FTP client indicated that it was renaming the files as it was moving them.

At this point I became shut-out of the admin page (I got a 404 error I think).

I thought I would back-track one stage, so I moved the core files back to where they were originally. Now I refreshed the original blog web address, and the blog text is restored, except with no formatting or images (or pages apart from the front page). The problem now, is that all of the links have been updated to point to the ‘new’ URL versions of the old pages. This includes the log-in page.

So what happens is that I try to log-in to the admin area and it takes me to a non-existent URL ie. http://www.newblogaddress/wp-login.php. I manually edit the URL to: http://www.oldblogaddress/wp-login.php and hey presto, I go to a weird version of a log-in page (with no formatting), but when I try to enter my user/password – it attempts to log-in through to a non-existent URL at the new address and I get a 404 error.

So, I don’t need a new password, rather, I can’t send the browser to the correct log-in page (on the old blog URL) as it has been changed to point to the new URL for all links, including the [LOGIN] button for the admin area.

What I’d like to do is change the blog back so it points to the old URL again, and take it from there again using a different method.

Is there anyway to access the admin area?

    Many thanks,
    D

What a mess. I think you confused the instructions for simply moving wordpress at the same domain and host and moving to a new domain.

Did you move – export and import – the database to the new hosting/directory? And: did you change DNS from the old domain to the new domain, or did the new domain/hosting already exist? Did you change any settings in wp-config.php?

My FTP client indicated that it was renaming the files as it was moving them.

Renaming them to what? When you look at the new hosting, does it look like all the wordpress files are there? Did you try manually uploading a new set of WP files?

If you want to go back to the old URL, try deleting the .htaccess file. You may still need to go in with phpmyadmin to change URLs in the old database. Do you have phpmyadmin at the old host and/or directory?

    Dear Songdogtech,
Thanks for this. To be honest, I don’t quite know what happened, but I found a workaround. I simply deleted everything from the blog directory and uploaded the entire back up folder (not using the xml backup to ‘import’) and it seemed to work more or less, with a little tidying up.

Unfortunately I don’t appear to have learned any more about how this works, but the site is back up. I don’t have access to myphp as am on a mac and my host site (dreamhost) doesn’t seem to allow access to this.
anyhow, thanks for taking the time.
    Daniel

Good that it’s working now. Dreamhost does have phpmyadmin, if you need it in the future: PhpMyAdmin – DreamHost. And it doesn’t matter if yoiu’re on Windows or Mac, as it runs through your web browser and hosting control panel. You don’t install phpmyadmin locally on your Mac or PC; you use it on the hosting server.
