    Can I show just a few photos in my excerpt on the post that includes the gallery? Is this possible?

    There’s no way to pull the part of the gallery. If you have an excerpt page where you want to show the part of the gallery, you should create a second gallery for this purpose. Or simply you can duplicate your current gallery, remove the items you don’t need in your excerpt page and publish that shortcode for that specific purpose. I think is workaround should work for you.
