    When I drag a search widget to the sidebar, everything else on the sidebar disappears. How can I get the search widget posted, but keep my other categories, links, etc in the sidebar?

    you can’t.
    that is the idea of a dynamic sidebar; it holds some items to show while no widgets are dragged into it; when the first widget is in the sidebar, they are gone, and you need to drag the widgets of the former elements into it as well;
    this gives you more possibilities in arranging the lists the way you want.

    Will I lose my links and items in the current sidebar if I do this, or will they carry over to the new widgets?
