[Plugin: Contact Form 8] no confirmation or error messages

I tried posting this to the Contact Form 7 forum, but didn’t get a response.

I am using CF8 with a Fhi-zin theme and only two active widgets – Text and Meta.

CF8 sends the emails, but it doesn’t display any response messages. I have added the tag [response] to the Form settings, both enclosed in <p></p> tags and not, but I still don’t get any display after clicking the Send button.

When I check the files in the editor, only the contact-form-8/wp-contact-form-8.php is listed as active. All the other files are listed as inactive.

I am fairly new to WordPress, so I’m probably missing something real simple. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.
