Refresh Entire Sitemap After Template Changes

    Hi, Yoast folks!

    Thanks for a fantastic plugin. I see that the sitemap XML files are using the Last Modified date for each individual post and page on my WordPress site. Makes sense.

    My problem is that I am attempting to have Google reindex my entire site (4000+ WP pages) after making <title> changes in my theme files. (My old title scheme left out some key elements on the mobile theme, and once Google switched to mobile indexing priority last year now a bunch of my titles look terrible in search results.) I’ve disabled the Yoast XML sitemaps, flushed the cache, and re-enabled it — but of course it looks identical, since the posts and pages haven’t been modified.

    Question: How can I generate a sitemap with updated dates for all my site pages? Does Yoast ignore template changes (even in its own <title> builder)? Am I going to have to manually modify all 4000+ pages, or find a plugin capable of “touching” everything on the site? Or can Yoast bring all my Last Modified dates in the sitemap to 2020?

    @darren_s We tested the plugin and only modified Title settings using the Yoast SEO plugin’s Snippet Editor function, and do see that the ‘Last Mod’ date in the sitemap was updated. That was without any changes to the page’s content.

    Can you please let us know specifically how you are trying to implement the title changes on your site?

    Thanks for the swift response. In this case I am creating custom titles for multiple nested “Page” sections using PHP conditionals in the theme’s header.php file. (This is in part because Yoast doesn’t quite have all the title snippet variables I need, such as grandparent page title as well as several page-specific queries; and also because this was already implemented on the theme level before I installed Yoast.)

    Is the Snippet Editor that you tested the one that appears on each individual Page editor (and not the global settings, as at SEO > Search Appearance > Content Types > Pages)? If so, how could I “touch” all of these site-wide without opening all 4,000 pages in the editor?

    Hello @darren_s!

    Yes, the Yoast SEO meta box on each individual page. Sorry to say there’s no option in the plugin to mass update all your pages. You can use another plugin for that though.
