[Plugin: W3 Total Cache] Pages load very slow during cache generation

This is weird. Once I install and activate W3 the pages get cached but load extremely slow during the caching (10 secs minimum). After that they load fast like they should. Clearly this isn’t optimal since the pages get cached anew frequently, right?

The most baffling thing is that I had the exact same problem with WP-Supercache and since I tried all kinds of things there to fix that, but to no avail, I actually switched to W3 in the hope it would work better. Any ideas what would cause this cache-writing slowness?

Could this be a server issue? Hostgator actually recommended supercache to me so this would be strange. Plus Im on a dedicated server.

Unfortunately there are numerous yet obscure reasons why this can occur and the way to start the troubleshooting process is to submit a bug report via the support tab inside W3TC.

Ok thanks, I will try some debugging once I reinstall the plugin. When I did debugging in supercache nothing erroneous was reported though.

Btw, why is it actually necessary to delete cached pages periodically? Why not keep them indefinitely, and only have them clear once a post gets updated or commented on?

Again if you could submit a bug submission report that would be ideal.

Pages change for various reasons or simply become old. If you want to keep cached pages for a long time, simply increase the expiry time.

Ok, I just reinstalled and loaded a few pages. Here is the debug information I found at the bottom of the page sources. I wrote a couple of comments in between. Everything was set to write to disk. (Btw, what’s the different between basic and enhanced page caching method?) Let me know if you can detect whats causing the error. Thanks!

As you can see, logged in users do not receive cache pages so there is no performance increase in this case (except for minify or CDN, which you are not using yet). There is likely another issue with your server configuration causing the slow down or there are too many other sites on it. This information won’t help me find any errors.

So open your site in another browser that is not logged into your site or log out of your site to see the caching performance. And remember if you just emptied the cache it will be created on the first page view and the second page load will be faster because the cache file then exists.

what’s the different between basic and enhanced page caching method?

Enhanced mode is clearly better than basic and you should use it. The purpose of basic mode is that as soon as you install the plugin your site will be 50x faster or more. Enhanced mode is obviously even faster than basic mode.

Btw, I’m on a dedicated server (host gator) so there are no other sites on it.

This debug info is not helpful. Please upgrade the plugin and submit a bug submission via the support tab of the plugin with login credentials if the problem still exists.

Why isn’t it helpful? That is all that shows on the page source. I upgraded from 0.8.5 to 0.8.5.1 but the slow loading still persists. I cannot submit debug info via the support tab because when I click on “support” in settings, it brings up the following error message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_user_by() in /home/myusername/public_html/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/Plugin/TotalCache.php on line 1194

What’s going on here?

It’s not helpful because that information is not enough to troubleshoot this case. I’ll need access to your server if you cannot submit a bug submission.

Do you know what causes my error message with the support tab? Could it point to the overall problem? I went into the TotalCache.php file but I’m not sure how to find line 1194.

Access to my server,hmm…are you asking me for my login data for my cpanel? Sorry, I’m quite a noobie with these things (in case you haven’t figured that out yet haha).

p.s.: Could the problem be that I’m using WordPress 2.7?

Oh boy, nevermind frederick…I just had a longer chat with hostgator and just found out that I’m NOT on a dedicated server. Great! I thought thats what their business plan entailed but its only a dedicated IP….but to makes things worse, that hasn’t been enabled either. lol. Oh well, at least I know now what the problem is.

Hostgator pointed me towards VPS hosting now – will this suffice to get caching to work? It already comes with more RAM too.

The plugin will work for any host: shared, virtual or dedicated. But in your case, yes, you should definitely go almost anywhere else.
