Problems with media upload

When I try to upload an image to my media library, it often uploads as square rather than the original shape. If I upload a book cover, it cuts off the top or bottom, making it square. I’m trying now to upload a banner that is a longer horizontal rectangle. It’s fine as a .jpg image on my computer, but I can’t get it uploaded in a usable form. Any ideas? Thanks.
