Hi – I can’t seem to get the plugin to show me a table of contents including my site pages. It works within the context of a single page picking up post heading content, but does not include any other pages. I have created a single page to act as a global table of contents, created 5 other placeholder pages (with titles) and was expecting that upon activating the auto-insert options for ToC, I would see a table of contents include all pages (titles/links) and all posts (heading links).

What do I need to do to make it show a page listing? I’m using the latest version of WP.

Also, it would be nice if the Table of Contents was context sensitive by page. For example, on my main page, I want it to show a high-level list of pages and posts. When I go to an individual page, I may want to drill down into each posts. Also, for my events page, I want a Table of Contents for events, but do not necessarily want events included everywhere. I just started using the plugin and maybe it does some of the things that I am currently asking about…but it looks like it just offers global checkboxes with no context scoping.

    Thanks for your help.

I just tried again and with the following additional changes:

    1. I made sure that the sub-pages all had the intended table of contents page as a header page.
    2. On each page, I made sure there was an H1 heading field just in case.
    3. I set the Table of Contents to show if there were 1 or more items.

Result: Still no listing of site pages on the ToC page.

I couldn’t get your plugin to do what I want. Ultimately, the simplest solution for the page listing was just to use the List Pages Shortcode plugin, which works without any hassle. (https://wordpress.org/plugins/list-pages-shortcode/) And, it seems to work with the latest version of wordpress.

However, within my List Pages index, I will probably use your plugin to generate page/post Table of Contents entries once I start creating content, since I have already verified that functionality. It just doesn’t seem to work with page listings (for me).

Correct ezTOC does not create page indexes. It creates a TOC from the heading nothing a page and displays that TOC on that page.

OK – Thanks. I appreciate your reply. It might help to clarify this issue in the plugin details, because when I saw the “Pages” setting, I interpreted it to mean that the plugin would look at the pages I had defined in WordPress and create a list of them as a Table of Contents — along the lines of a site map. Also, the first feature described in the feature list is: “Automatically generate a table of contents for your posts, pages and custom post types by parsing its contents for headers.” It’s a bit misleading. Again, I read that to mean that you would index all the pages of the site. While the misunderstanding/assumption is mine, the top-level feature definition and settings text could be much more clear about the fact that it only operates within the context of a single page…which I guess also answers my question about context-sensitivity. There’s no context issue if each instance of the control only applies to one page. Anyway – looks like a great Table of Contents plugin as long as you don’t try to use it as a site map tool 😉 …and I am sure I will end up using it!
