[Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Why does NextGen choke on ‘Scan folder…’?

Why does NextGen choke on ‘Scan folder for new images’? What is it doing that requires so much resources?
I’m looking for a solution to present RAW/Hi-Res pictures (5-6 Mb each) to clients for download. Does NextGen have a way to only give a download link with the thumbnails, instead of displaying originals in the browser?
