Actually the problem isn’t the browser cache. The problem is that when you work with external images, you don’t have thumbnails.
There are some workarounds for that and if you contact the support I can show you how it can be done.
A definitive solution is going to be released in a few months. So optimized resized external images will become a reality.

I just would like to say that FIFU is now integrated with Jetpack CDN. With Jetpack plugin installed, all your external images will be automatically optimized and stored in a CDN, that will serve the thumbnails. So speed shouldn’t be a problem anymore.
