    Hi,

Looking to upgrade WC and WP to the latest. Right now we’re on:

    Wordpress: 4.6.1
    Woocommerce: 2.6.4

    running SuperStore theme.

Should we upgrade WP to the latest, then Woocommerce after that? Is my current WC compatible with the latest WP?

    Thank you,
    -Brent

  • The best way to handle this is to create a staged version somewhere else and then go about upgrading both frameworks. Do not do this on a live environment.

Even better would be to do it in a local environment like MAMP or something similar. That way you can view all the issues, if any, that arise.

@nullbert I’ll echo the above answer. I would strongly recommend not to try these updates on a live site without testing first on a staging environment.

You are updating from very old versions of both WooCommerce and WordPress, and a lot has changed since those versions. I’d recommend creating a staging site, where you can test the updates first, and resolve any issues that arise before you try the same on the live site.

We recommend that these steps are taken on a staging site, which is a clone of your live site that you can modify without risking making any permanent damage to your live site. You can create it using a plugin like WP-Staging: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-staging/

This plugin lets you copy and redeploy a WordPress site with minimal work.

Thanks for the quick replies. On my staging site, would you recommend upgrading WP first, then WC?

Often times it doesn’t matter which order you go in. Just as long as your doing this all on a staged environment.

Make sure it’s the latest files from your live site. And then have at it.

I would also suggest turning on debug after you’re all done to view any template issues if any. Just to be sure.

Then run tests on your variable products if you have any and try a test checkout using a testing card with your payment gateway or sandbox from PayPal. Whatever you’re using.

If everything is looking good put your live site in maintenance mode and up date it as well. I usually take a day or two to test everything before I do anything with a live site.
