502 errors caused by plugin
-
Yesterday (5/18/20) our team experienced sporadic 502/504 timeout errors when attempting to login to our WordPress dashboard. After checking the following, we determined that our installation of the WP Audit Log plugin was somehow causing the issue. Deactivating the plugin eliminated the issue.
WordPress version: 5.4.1
Plugin version: 4.0.3
Admins affected: 3What we did to narrow down the issue:
- Checked site traffic – nothing out of the ordinary for any of our pages
- Spoke with hosting support (WPEngine) – they confirmed that their logs showed multiple 502/504 errors, but said there were no issues server-side
- Attempted to access our site dashboard through our company VPN – this worked temporarily because we were using different IPs, but the issue came back about an hour after
- Noticed the WP Security Audit Log widget on the dashboard wasn’t loading content normally. There were several blank spaces where log info should usually be. We tried deactivating the plugin and this seemed to resolve the issue
Please advise if you are aware of any settings with the plugin, or possible interference with other plugins, that might cause an issue like this. Please also reply if you need more information from me to help diagnose this issue.
