For the main placeholder item you can create a Custom Link Menu item and in the url put a #.
See screenshot: https://snipboard.io/kwjRph.jpg
Use a “custom link” and put in # as the link content.

Thanks for you help although I am still having difficulty. Matias sent me a screen shot which appears to show the menu structure and the ability to highlight/expand a specific parent item to add a custom link. I don’t appear to be able to do that.
On my screen there is column listing pages, posts, custom link and categories. Expanding the Custom link item gives me a URL box https:// and another box Link Text. I don’t appear to be able to relate this to any specific menu item.
The menu structure of all the items is in another column. Expanding any parent item does not give access to a custom link. Navigation label is the only additional item.
I hope you are able to understand this,a screen shot would be better but I cannot do that yet either.

Overtype “https://” with “#” and add the menu item. See https://i.imgur.com/rrZwKAt.png

Thanks Steve
I think I did this before but it created anther item on the menu bar so I thought it was wrong. I had to move all my sub-menus to the new items and delete the original items. Anyway it is sorted now so thanks for your help.
