Hi, the option to split sitemaps is there for when your sitemaps encounter problems like a long generation (response) time making them slow or when your server runs into PHP memory issues (sitemaps failing to respond).
If you have a large site, set it to yearly sitemaps. If you see some year sitemaps are running into errors (or are very slow) then switch to monthly.
