Form field input pattern

Hi,
Currently, if an input field is marked as optional and an input pattern is specified to check against the input if in case entered by the user, the user is being forced to enter the value which is not correct as the field is optional. So is it possible to check the optional input field to check against being empty or an input pattern if mentioned?
