Visual editor disappears

When I go to write a page I have the choice between the visual editor and the HTML and both work. however when I go back to edit the page or post the visual shows nothing except for a word count, but the text can be edited in the HTML.
Can any one tell me why this and what I need to do to put it right. I can’t work it out, I have back tracked on everything I altered recently – but it is still like that.
The only thing I altered was the header – but I put that back to how it was
Can anyone help me please? Thanks so much in advance.
