Side Bar Issues

I am trying to remove the sidebar from my home page and span it across 1000px which I can do without an issue. The problem comes when I try to incorporate the side bar into my archives.php file. The problem only exists in Safari as far as I know.(I am on a mac and can’t test IE.) Chrome and Safari work just fine with this. I just used the standard php sidebar call at the bottom of the page of archives.php. My next problem is the side bar across all browsers I can test shows up at the bottom of the page instead of right below the header like it should. I have my css set for the archive.php pages set so their is enough room for it to be there unlike the index pages. These are my two prime problem pages.
