Hi everyone. I recently installed Google XML Sitemaps plugin, and I followed the installation instructions, activated the plugin, and everything seemed to be fine and a successful situation.

But then today I checked my google webmaster tools, and it says it found an error in my sitemap:

We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.
    HTTP Error: 404
Problem detected on: Oct 13, 2009

There doesn’t seem to be support on the plugin home page so I thought I’d check here. Any suggestions?

  • fifthhouse,

Both the sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz files should be in the root directory ( the same directory as wp-content folder ) double check this and the link provided to Google to the sitemap. Could simply be a typo.

Thanks doc4. I checked those and it seems fine. But maybe I didn’t understand the plugin functions. I thought that the plugin automatically submitted my sitemap to google but now I am thinking I need to do that myself through my webmaster tools. Do you know if that is the case?

    fifthhouse,

I recommend submitting the sitemap to Google to get things started. Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask.com etc will simply need to know where the files are located before the plugin can kick in.
